The 2 master “Hawila” is built in Norway in 1935 and owned by the association “Hawila Project”, dedicating the ship to experiments in climate-friendly lifestyle and CO2-neutral transport.
“Sailing City” crew has roots in all continents, from New Delhi and Bangalore to Sidney, Rome, Berlin, Bornholm, Ouagadougou, Quito, Qaqortoq and California.
The project work from an artistic perspective on the themes climate change, lifestyle, and climate justice. “Sailing City” aims to find new ways to communicate, about the state of the planet, and about our own state of being … We seek a greater understanding of the fact that we are residents in a global community, where actions in one place, affect the climate in another.
Participants in the “Sailing City” would like to help eliminate powerlessness, and instead engage ourselves in meaningful alternatives, in positive symbiosis with our environment.
Like many other people around the globe, we do not want to contribute to a numb and greedy consumer culture, where the consequences of lifestyle, unsustainable growth and fossil fuels, today affects the living conditions of more and more people, and create irreversible damage to the nature we ourselves are a part of.
On “Sailing City” project we take the time, to be inspired by, and discuss climate change and paradoxes concerning our own lifestyle.
On board Hawila you can meet permafrost researchers, plastic-molecule experts, contact dancers, percussionists, sea woman, camera men, installation artists, diesel engineers, agricultural developers, computer designers, physiotherapists, yachtsmen and … Artists and activists challenge and play in the physical space surrounding the sailing ship, dancers improvising, musicians floating in the masts, and acrobats walking on water.
“Sailing City” is created in an open dialogue between both the many participants and local visitors, and everyone’s input and presence is in play.
